WalletHub released its 2025 list of Property Taxes by State on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The study compared real estate and vehicle property taxes across the US, ranking New Jersey 51st — dead last when counting Washington, DC — for homeownership costs.

Garden State homeowners pay an average of $9,541 in annual property taxes on a median-priced home, more than three times the national average of $2,969.

"Some states charge no property taxes at all, while others charge an arm and a leg," said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. "Americans who are considering moving and want to maximize the amount of money they take home should take into account property tax rates, in addition to other financial factors like the overall cost of living, when deciding on a city.”

Connecticut and New York weren't far behind New Jersey, with the third- and sixth-highest property tax burdens respectively. Homeowners in Connecticut pay an estimated $6,575 in real estate taxes, while those in New York face an average bill of $6,450.

Massachusetts (35th) and Pennsylvania (40th) property taxes were also among the nation's highest. Homeowners in Massachusetts pay an estimated $5,813 and Pennsylvania homeowners average $3,241 in property taxes.

Virginia and Maryland landed in the middle of the pack, ranking 19th and 31st for real estate taxes. Virginia homeowners pay an average of $2,686, while those in Maryland face an annual bill of $3,989.

While homeowners in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland pay nothing in vehicle property taxes, residents in Virginia face the highest vehicle tax in the country. The average Virginia vehicle owner would pay $1,139 annually for a Toyota Camry, the nation's top-selling vehicle in 2024.

Connecticut and Massachusetts also ranked poorly for vehicle taxes. Connecticut placed 44th with an annual car tax of $605 and Massachusetts landed at 45th with a $646 tax bill.

In the 26 states with vehicle property taxes, residents pay $492 on average each year.
